Junior Leaders @ Instructor Training Weekend Workshops

Junior Leaders, members ages 14-18, have provided vital leadership in Ohio 4-H programs for a number of years. Junior Leaders have been welcomed at 4-H Shooting Sports Instructor Training Weekends as well. A well-trained, mature Junior Leader can be a real asset in helping adult volunteers teaching shooting classes.

Unfortunately, there have continued to be problems with some Juniors Leaders lacking the maturity and judgment to discipline themselves and participate appropriately during the instructor training weekends. The weekend instructor training workshops are conducted as an adult experience and we do not have the time and energy to supervise teens. The 2001 weekends had over 120 participants both Spring and Fall. Some disciplines had numbers beyond what our instructors felt were optimum for quality training.

After considerable discussion, the State 4-H Shooting Sports Committee decided that for 2002 workshops, Junior Leaders will be required to complete a special application in order to attend. Based on the information provided, they may or may not be invited to participate. One key criteria will be an adult of the same gender who will serve as the junior leader's mentor/supervisor, sleeping in the same cabin and participating in the same discipline as the junior leader. This will insure that the adult responsible is on hand in all the environments where we have experienced problems in the past. Cost for Junior Leader's will be $75.00. The committee suggests that the cost be shared by participant, shooting club, and county 4-H committee.
